Welcome to Kroc Swim Academy  

We are very excited to present the American Red Cross learn to swim program with Parent and Child levels 1 and 2, Preschool levels (1-3), and school age levels (1-6). Breaking the levels up by skill and age allows us to teach the basic skills and fundamentals required to advance to the next level.

Age Range: 6mo–2yr

A water adjustment class for parent and child. Basic skills are introduced with games and songs. Swim diapers required.

Age Range: 2–4yr 11mo

A water adjustment class for preschool students who have had difficulty transitioning to a class without parent participation. Basic skills from Level 1 are introduced, with parent participation in the water.

Age Range: 3–5yr

The focus is submersion and breath control working on independent floating, gliding, and kicking on front and back. Upon successful completion, swimmers will be able to kick while using a kickboard, float on their front and back, steamboat and back glide for two body lengths.

Prerequisites for this level:
   • Beginning level, no skill set needed

Age Range: 3–5yr

The focus is working on productive, propulsive arm strokes and effective kicks on front and back. Upon successful completion, the swimmer will be able to coordinate side breathing with arm strokes on a kickboard, swim five body lengths on their back doing winging and kicking, and jump into the water then swim to the wall unassisted.

Prerequisites for this level:
   • 5 Rhythmic bobs (exhalation underwater)
   • Front and back float 10 seconds (independently)
   • Flutter kick on board 2 body lengths
   • Steamboat off wall 2 body lengths (chin tucked)
   • Back glide off wall 2 body lengths (hips up)

Age Range: 3–5yr

The focus is crawl stroke proficiency, introduction of new back skills, and orienting to deeper water. Upon successful completion, they will be able to catch 5 breaths doing crawl stroke, roll on their back, then swim winging and kicking on their back for a total of 15 yards.

Prerequisites for this level:
   • 10 Rhythmic bobs (exhalation underwater)
   • Front and back kicks on board 5 body lengths (no bicycle kick)
   • Arm strokes w/ kicks (productive and propulsive arms, efficient kicks)
   • Crawl stroke on board 5 breaths (arms clearing water, head flat, no bicycle kick)
   • Winging and kicking off wall 5 body lengths (hips up, no bicycle kick)

Age Range: 6–12

The focus is continued stroke development on crawl stroke and backstroke, getting ready for more advanced strokes, and starting the diving progression with sitting and kneeling dives. Upon successful completion, swimmers will be able to swim crawl stroke and backstroke for 15 yards and pass the swim test.

Prerequisites for this level:
   • Front and back kicks on board 25 yards
   • Streamline kicks on back 15 yards (body at 30° from surface)
   • Crawl stroke 15 yards (no double pull, continuous kick, body nearly horizontal, no rolling onto back) 
   • Back stroke 15 yards (arms clearing water, continuous kick)
   • Elementary backstroke 15 yards (hips and knees in line, flexed feet wider than knees, timing is bend, out, glide)

Age Range: 6–12

The focus is increasing stroke proficiency and endurance, learning breaststroke, and continuing the diving progression with standing dives. Upon successful completion, swimmers will be able to swim 50 yards crawl stroke, 50 yards backstroke, and 25 yards of breaststroke with proper timing and technique.
 
Prerequisites for this level:
   • Front and back kicks on board 25 yards
   • Streamline kicks on back 15 yards (body at 30° from surface)
   • Crawl stroke 25 yards (no double pull, continuous kick, body nearly horizontal, no rolling onto back)
   • Back stroke 25 yards (arms clearing water, continuous kick)
   • Breaststroke 15 yards (hips and knees in line, flexed feet wider than knees, timing is bend, out, glide)

Age Range: 6–12

The focus is continued stroke proficiency and endurance, learning butterfly, and finishing the diving progression with long, shallow dives. Upon successful completion, swimmers will be able to swim continuously for 300 yards, tread water for two minutes, and demonstrate underwater swimming.

Prerequisites for this level:
   • Crawl stroke 50 yards (body nearly horizontal, bent arm recovery, bent arm pull finishing past hip, continuous kick from hips)
   • Back stroke 50 yards (body nearly horizontal, straight arm recovery, bent arm pull, arms in opposition, continuous kick)
   • Breast stroke 25 yards (body nearly horizontal on glide, pull stops before chest, no scissor or flutter kick, flexed feet, correct timing)
   • Elementary backstroke 25 yards (hips and knees in line, flexed feet wider than knees, movement on glide)

Age Range: 6–12

The focus is stroke refinement, preparation for the competitive aquatic activities like swim team, diving, water polo, and synchronized swimming, and preparation for lifeguarding. Upon successful completion, they will have completed a 500-yard continuous swim, tried skills from each of the competitive aquatic sports, and learned some basic water safety skills.

Prerequisites for this level:
   • Crawl stroke 100 yards (body nearly horizontal, bent arm recovery, bent arm pull finishing past hip, 2 to 6 beat continuous kick, alternate side-breathing preferred)
   • Back stroke 100 yards (body nearly horizontal, straight arm recovery, bent arm pull, arms in opposition, continuous kick)
   • 300-yard continuous swim (First Day check only)
   • Breast stroke 50 yards (body nearly horizontal on glide, pull stops before chest, flexed feet wider than knees finishing with extended ankles on glide, correct timing)
   • Butterfly 25 yards (straight arms clearing water on recovery, bent arm pulls finishing past hips, breathe to the front, one kick per stroke acceptable)

Age Range: 13+

The focus of this 30 minute class will be to gain confidence in and around the water by learning basic swimming strokes and skills needed to stay safe in and around water. Participants will learn to refine their front crawl and back crawl in addition to building endurance.
