Benefits of Aquatic Exercise

Click on a topic to learn more.

BuoyancyThis water property allows people to do exercises that are difficult on land. Depending on the water level you will only be impacting 20-25% of your body weight. No pounding or jarring, just less impact.
ResistanceThere is continual resistance to every move you make. The water alone offers 12% - 14% more resistance than when you exercise on land. No equipment is necessary to increase strength.
Heart RateThe hydrostatic pressure of water pushes equally on all body surfaces and helps the heart circulate blood by aiding blood flow back to the heart. This results in lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep-water exercise verses similar exercise on land. Consequently, your heart rate is an estimated 10-15 beats lower per minute during suspended water exercise than for the same effort applied on land.
Cooling EffectsWater disperses heat more efficiently, so there is less chance of overheating. The water continuously cools the body. Exercise in the water is cooler and more comfortable than it is on land.

Whatever your personal fitness goals may be; weight loss, strength training, continuing movement after therapy or surgery, cross training as an athlete, our team of aquatic trainers can create a program for you to accomplish your goals.

Aquatic Fitness is defined as activities performed in the water that promote and enhance physical and mental fitness. Aquatic Fitness is typically performed in a vertical position in shallow and/or deep water. There are numerous applications to appeal to a wide variety of participants.

Water lends itself to a well-balanced workout that improves all major components of physical fitness -- aerobic training, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition.

Shallow water programming is performed anywhere from waist to chest depth. The feet remain in contact with the pool bottom during most of the workout providing a low impact training option.

Deep water programs are performed in water depths that allow the participant to remain vertical (upright) and not in contact with the bottom, eliminating impact. Flotation equipment is utilized to maintain correct alignment and provide a truly non-impact workout.

A certified and qualified professional will design an individualized exercise program, utilizing the unique properties of water, specified for your personal wellness goals and needs.

You can receive a copy of each of your training session plans.

You and your Aquatic Personal Trainer will work to develop a plan of how you will continue forward to best meet your goals.

Aquatic personal training is perfect for those who are looking to…

  • Bridge from therapy to fitness -pre and post injury or surgery – with doctors’ approval for in water movement.
  • Manage neuromusculoskeletal such as cerebral palsy, as well as other conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease.
  • Cross train for both land and water sports.
  • Find a more joint friendly workout.

Anyone who loves to be in the water or is interested in seeing what water has to offer.

Aquatic training is unique in many ways. In the water we are utilizing aspects of buoyancy in our training to overcome the pull of gravity. Here are a few other great benefits of training in the water.

  • Reduced weight-bearing allows participants to do some movements that they may not be able to do on land.
  • Extra feeling of security due to less fear of falling or being injured.
  • Water provides greater freedom of movement and resistance in every direction of movement.
  • Hydrostatic pressure from water reduces swelling and allows higher intensity exercise as the heart rate is lowered when the chest deep water.
  • Water increases the blood and oxygen supply to the muscles.
  • The amount of weight-bearing of the body can easily be adjusted by changing the depth of the water the participant is in.
