• Teach children water safety and swimming skills as early as possible.

• Always brief babysitters on water safety, emphasizing the need for constant supervision.

• Appoint a “designated watcher” to monitor children during social gatherings at or near pools and lakes.

• Don’t use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision. Never allow a young child in a pool or lake without an adult.

• Learn to perform CPR on children and adults, and update those skills regularly.

• If you or a family member is a weak or non-swimmer, wear a life vest. It's nothing to be embarrassed about.

• Never leave your child unattended around water. Babies can drown in as little as one inch of water.

• Empty buckets, containers and kiddie pools immediately after use. Store them upside down so they don't collect water.
