The Details of Bell Ringing

Volunteering to ring the bell at a Red Kettle can take as little two hours, it fills a great need in the community, and it's a lot of fun! By signing up early, you can pick the day, time and location that fits best for you. Volunteering to be a Bell Ringer means you are helping to raise funds for 15 local community outreach programs facilitated by The Salvation Army Kroc Center including Clothe a Child, Families Feeding Families, emergency assistance and summer camp scholarships. All funds raised in Kootenai County, stay in Kootenai County.

You can ring individually or with your family, co-workers, friends from school, or members of your church. Children are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Music and singing are encouraged!

Note for group leaders: You can reserve a location for an entire day (10AM–7PM) for your group under your name and work to fill the day with volunteers in 1-hour or 2-hour shifts. It is per store policy that no more than 2 people ring at one time unless you have arranged in advance with Kroc Staff.

SHIFT START

The Kettle is waiting for you at customer service for the first shift, and the kettle stand is off to one side inside the entrance of most stores.

Place kettle stand OUTSIDE the door at Albertsons, Super 1, Walmart and Yoke's.

Black Sheep, Cabela's, Fred Meyer, JCPenney, Macy's, and Safeway, are the ONLY sites that allow bell ringers in the breezeway.

APRONS & BELL

These items should be in a stocking on the kettle stand. Occasionally they end up at customer service.

THE "SHOW"

DO: Wear plenty of warm clothing (even indoor locations can be chilly), bring hot cocoa or coffee, sing, play an instrument, bring cute kids, and be festive. Feel free to wish people a "Merry Christmas" or "God Bless." Friendliness and smiles are a must.

Per store policy, please limit your group to no more than 2 people volunteering at one time unless you have arranged in advance with Kroc Staff to take a group.

DON'T: Overtly solicit donations or evangelize, simply give folks the opportunity to give, and please don't block doorways. Sorry, no pets allowed and please refrain from using your cell phone while at the Kettle!

BREAKS

We ask that the kettle NEVER be unattended. Either take turns when it comes to breaks or leave the kettle at Customer Service.

END OF DAY

We swap out the Kettle between 6:15 and 7:00PM each day. You will give the swapper - Kroc Center staff - the full kettle and take the empty kettle to Customer Service. Put apron and bells back in the stocking and put the kettle stand off to the side.

FOLLOW-UP

Kettles are totaled the following week and we will make sure to let you know how much your group helped us raise.
